How to Stay Productive When Working on Facebook

Ahhhh Facebook… the endless source of distractions.

If you have ever logged into Facebook to check one notification and looked up only to realize an hour has passed you by, you know what I’m talking about.

The truth is, Facebook wants to keep you on their website and app – and they do a really good job at it. That’s really what the algorithm is about at the end of the day: how to serve you the most relevant, engaging, and interesting content and keep you scrolling and logged in.

This simple idea is the power behind advertising on Facebook + Instagram.

It’s also the downfall of many who attempt to do so.

Why? Because in order to run ads on Facebook and Instagram, we need to use Facebook’s Ads Manager or Power Editor.. which means we need to be on Facebook.

Today, we’re sharing one of our favorite tools to help you hone in and focus on running your ads, without getting sucked into all the cute cat videos waiting in your feed.

Pete and I have been running Facebook ads for our clients for over two years now, which means we spend an inordinate amount of time on the platform.

It’s a part of our job, and there’s just no way around logging into the platform. And if you’re a business owner, we’re hoping you’re using Facebook, too.

Here’s why: Facebook is one of the best opportunities for you to grow your business and reach your ideal audience. After a few years and tens of thousands of dollars in testing, we can confidently tell you that Facebook ads have resulted in the best ROI and results for all of our clients across the board.

Regardless of it you’re running ads or not, odds are you’re logging in to Facebook a few times during the day (week… hour..)

Thankfully, there’s a tool out there that can help you stay super focused when using Facebook for your business: Todobook.

How to Use TodoBook to Block Your Facebook News Feed

Todobook is a Google Chrome extension. So the first step, is to download Google chrome – which if you’re working or doing anything at all on your computer, you should 100% be using Chrome as your browser! Next to Facebook, Google runs the world + using Chrome will make your life so SO much easier if you use G Suite or any Google apps for work.

Todobook’s mission pretty much sums up the glory of this extension:

Turn the Facebook News Feed into a todo list so you can stop wasting time and start getting things done.

Enter: allllll the praise hands!

To get started, you can download the free Todobook extension from the Google Chrome web store.

Once installed, you can go to your Chrome extension settings to enable the extension and choose which websites you want it to be active on by clicking “Options”

You can see the list of websites in the “Options” settings. We personally enable it on Facebook, since that’s where we spend most of our work hours running ads.

Activate Todobook on Multiple Platforms

Now, when you log into Facebook, Todobook will take the place of your News Feed.

The goal here is not only to block the News Feed from distracting you, but the extension also acts as a digital todo list! This makes my little organization-loving, type-A heart very happy!

In the section that says “What would you like to accomplish today?” simply start entering your To Do’s.

Once you have entered your To Do’s for the day, you will see a little button that says “Done” next to each one. Viola – your virtual, distraction-blocking to do list to the rescue!

My favorite part of the extension?

The fact that you have to click a link that says “Quitter” in order to access your News Feed. Ha! Developers, I give you major props for this little psychological temptation-stopper.

I actually feel bad any time I click “Quitter” before my To Do’s are done!

Setting Your Todobook Options

Now that we have some ToDo’s on our list, the last step is to choose our options.

If you’re anything like me, I’m more of an all-or-nothing kind of person with these kind of tools. That means I keep the extension running at all times of the day, and I block my News Feed until all of my To Do’s are complete.

If you’d like a little more flexibility to watch more cat videos during the day, you can change your options by clicking on the gear icon on the top right-hand side of the extension.

Todobook Options

You can customize all of the following options:

  • Unlock after:
    • Choose whether to unlock your News Feed after you complete all of your To Do’s or after each To Do that you complete
  • Unlock for:
    • The amount of time that is unlocked at a time – there’s a countdown and everything!
  • Enabled during:
    • Choose whether to block your News Feed always or only during office hours (8-6)

And there you have it! Your new secret to staying productive on Facebook.
